Tech - Firefox 2.0

I have been using Firefox since its inception and I am a big fan. The free Firefox browser, developed by Mozilla, a non profit corporation dedicated to cultivate competitive, viable community innovation.

Personally, I like the tabbed browser windows that does not require you to open a new window for a new browser window, like IE 6 and before. Microsoft has wizened up and IE 7 has incorporated this feature.

Aesthetics wise, the new release looks more vibrant and hip. It incorporates a search engine toolbar and there are 6 defaults to choose from, Google, Yahoo, eBay, Answers.com, Amazon and Creative Commons. You can even customise the search engines from mozilla's website.

As in previous versions of Firefox, 2.0 enables to use of add ons, widgets that increase the functionalities of Firefox. Some of the add ons may not be upgraded for use with 2.0 but you will be able to check or either that when you download the add on, Firefox will automatically check compatibility. One of my favourite add on is GSpace, a web based FTP like program that allows you to make use of your Gmail account like a storage space for your files.

There is also a smart spell check when you are typing in forms or for example as I am editing this blog post, it will underline words that are not in its dictionary.

When compared to IE7, which I do not really like, especially its interface, Firefox gets my thumbs up!

Other software improvements in this version includes:

  • Fixed memory leaks and improved performance
  • Built-in phishing protection will warn the user of suspicious sites
  • Persistent sessions will restore the session after system restart
  • Live Titles and microsummaries help sites convey the latest interesting content
  • Improved add-on manager helps the users manage extensions and themes
  • Enhanced security and localization support for extensions
  • Support for JavaScript 1.7

Life - My 2006 in Review

Today is the last day of 2006. My wife has this list of things that she has achieved in 2006 and her aspirations for 2007. Not much of a person to make resolutions and looking back into the past, I have learned however that reminding oneself of little achievements can bring up morale and put things into perspective. So here I go:

Achievements in 2006:

Managed to successfully transit into my new position in the new department, at least I am not the only staff in my department as was previously the case. (Long story.....). My new boss is a smart and nice guy to work for, demanding enough that I can learn something. Other colleagues are great people to work with.

Had my customary wedding ceremony in June and went for my honeymoon in Melbourne and Sydney.

Again successfully transited to working for a new boss in my department and new colleagues. (Long story again.....).

Got the promotion and pay raise that I was looking forward to.....

Setbacks in 2006:

Not really a setback but living together with another person is not easy and we have our moments.... still trying to fit our lives together.

My bosses left to start their own ventures.... another colleague left to work on HK. Once again, I was the only staff left in the department.

Anyway, I have good vibes about 2007 and I will not be making resolutions, if I wanna do something, I will go ahead and do it....... better post this before 12am....
